Sarah on the Playground
The kids taught Sarah how to go down the slide this week. They helped her up the steps and got her seated at the top of the slide. Then, to our surprise, Sarah was willing to wiggle and push herself off, coming down alone. What a brave little girl for her first day of sliding lessons!
Sarah loved swinging on Savannah's lap. She especially loved Andrew's entertainment while she swung.

Playing in the Fall Air

| Eight months - and counting . . . |
In the videos below, Sarah explores the playground, her little shoes squeaking with every step she takes. Squeaky toddler shoes are popular here. I did not realize I had bought her squeaker shoes until I got home and tried them on her. At first the squeaking scared her, but she quickly got over that and loves them now. And I always know where she is on the playground now . . . . just follow the squeak!

Beginner Band Day
All the fifth graders at Savannah's school participate in the fifth grade band. Last week, the kids received their instrument assignments. And on Saturday morning, they all met at the school to receive their instrument and have several hours of beginning instruction. Savannah was assigned the trombone, which had been her #1 request, so she was very excited about it. Joel played the trombone in high school and university marching bands, so Savannah thought it would be fun to learn the trombone like her daddy. At the end of their long Saturday, the fifth graders all gathered in the auditorium to give their first concert. We were impressed that they could play as well as they did, considering they had only a few hours of practice behind their belts. We can't wait to hear how they've improved by the time their Christmas concert rolls around.
Best Buddies
Despite the eight years of age difference, these two have a special bond. Andrew's gentle, caring nature makes him a wonderful older brother. Sarah loves him to pieces.
Strep & Double Ear Infections
Four days of high fever. She would wake up and I'd give her ibuprofen. Then she would just lay on the floor or in my arms for 40 minutes or so until it kicked in. It was so sad. Then I would feed her, give her antibiotics and she'd rest in my arms again while we watched a Baby Einstein or read books. Thank goodness for anti-biotics. She just finished her last dose a couple days ago, and we have our busy, happy little Sarah back. It's so wonderful to see her wobbling around the house again with her sweet little grin, getting into trouble at every turn.

The Little Crab Who Fell From Heaven
My kids have been begging for a pet hermit crab for years. We have told them that if we ever saw one at a pet store here, then we would buy it for them. But the pet stores we frequent never seem to have hermit crabs. Our kids never gave up hope, however, and I even heard Lizzie pray for one once in her bedtime prayers.
Well, a couple weeks ago, something miraculous happened. As the kids were walking to their piano lessons, Lizzie saw a shell moving on the side of the street. She pointed it out to the others and Andrew picked it up to inspect it. A cute little hermit crab poked out.
The kids were ecstatic! They raced back home and came bursting excitedly and nervously through the door, "Please don't be mad at us for not being at piano, Mom! We found a hermit crab on the street! Can we keep it? Please, please, please?"
"Of course we can keep it!" I replied, "This is amazing!"
They cheered and sang my praises. It was so cute to see them so happy. Since we are more than an hour from the coast, here in the middle of this concrete jungle, we figure he must have been discarded or escaped from his previous owner. What a miracle that my kids spotted him on the roadside.
A few days later, while at the store, I stopped in the pet section and picked up a plastic pet cage that looked good for a hermit crab. It has a little plastic palm tree in it that stands about 3 inches tall.
As we were eating dinner that night, I looked over at the cage and saw the crab, whom the kids named Pinchy, on top of the palm tree.
"Andrew, did you put Pinchy on top of the palm tree?" I asked.
"No. Did you, Savannah? Lizzie?" he asked.
"No," they each replied.
We stared at Pinchy in amazement. Sure enough, we discovered he had climbed up there himself. We kept watching and a few minutes later, we saw him climb down and then back up again. We had no idea that hermit crabs are such great climbers.
Here's to our cute little miracle crab, who seems to have fallen from heaven to my faithful, crab-loving kids. May he live a long life!
